The Real Trading Goal in 2026 (Not Making More Money)

As we head into the new year, I wanted to share a simple thought that’s been on my mind—especially after spending time with my family, getting away from the screen for a bit, and observing how traders behave as the calendar turns.

Most people enter the new year focused on setting goals. Number. Target. Percentage.

• “I want to double my account.”
• “I want to achieve X by the end of the year.”
• “I want this year to finally happen That year.”

There is nothing wrong with ambition. But in trading, chasing numbers is often the quickest way to do something you’ll regret.

The market doesn’t care about our goals. It doesn’t know what it is, and it certainly doesn’t reward us for wanting something so badly. It’s not the market’s job to help you make money.

The market has no work, so it will not respond to your commands. What’s that do what is addressed—over time—is skill, discipline, and consistency.

That’s why I no longer define success with numbers. I define it based on behavior.

Success, to me, looks like:

• • Trade with a plan.
  • Manage risk before thinking about reward.
  • Following the rules even when I feel like doing anything else.
  • Stay in the game long enough to let good decisions compound.

When you trade well, money tends to follow. When you trade poorly, the volatility kicks in first—and the charges usually come later.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned over the years is this: making money in the markets is not the goal—it is a byproduct of consistent trading. The goal is execution. The goal is the process. The goal is to become the type of trader who can be successful every market environment, not just an easy one.

And if you’re still at the beginning of your journey—or if you’re making some changes in your trading approach—give yourself permission to be imperfect.

Any real skill starts with being bad at it. Babies don’t just start walking one day. They fall thousands of times before they get the hang of it. They don’t magically start speaking in complete sentences one morning at breakfast. They say “goo-goo ga-ga” and point in a strange way before they say “Please pass the milk.”

Trading is actually no different. Making money consistently in the markets is very difficult. Of course it’s not impossible. But it’s very difficult. Otherwise, everyone would.

Most people stop before they get past the goo-goo ga-ga stage. They decide that trading is not for them, that the markets are rigged, or that no one can be successful as a trader.

None of that is true. What they miss is that everyone starts out bad at trading.

The key is to keep risks small as you learn, so that mistakes become lessons and not a way out of the game. With the passage of time and consistent application of good trading principles, then Sucking will be a thing of the past. And before you know it, your trading results improve.

As we enter 2026, my hope for you is simple:

• Define what success looks like You!
• Be gentle with yourself because you will make mistakes.
• Focus on perfecting specific trading processes.
• Repeat your process without deviation because you can only improve what you practice.
• Random trading, by definition, deviates from your process. Avoid them at all costs!
• Trade with intention, not boredom.
• Don’t look for fun in trading. Good trading is boring. But it’s also profitable.
• And aim to finish the year not only with more money, but as a better trader than you are today.

Trading success is actually not the important thing objective. It is journey.

Here’s to a smart, disciplined, and profitable 2026.
